Heinz Heinemann was born in Berlin, Germany in 1913. As a Jew coming of age during the Nazi regime, Heinemann's opportunities were limited and so he immigrated to Switzerland where he received his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Basel. In 1938 he again immigrated, this time to United States where he found employment from 1941 to 1948 as a research supervisor at the Attapulgas Clay Company.
